Drouin wins bronze, breaks own record

IU graduate Derek Drouin broke his own Canadian high jump record Thursday, leaping over the bar at 2.38-meters at the World Championships in Moscow.

The jump netted Drouin a bronze medal. It was the highest third-place jump in the meet’s history.

He attempted a jump at 2.41-meters, but was unable to clear. It was the first time in meet history three jumpers had attempted at that height.

It is the second bronze medal that Drouin has won on the world stage in the past year. He won bronze in the same event at the 2012 Olympics for Canada.

On Wednesday, Drouin learned that he finished second in fan voting for The Bowerman award, which is given to the nation’s top collegiate male and female track and field athlete.

UCLA’s Julian Wruck won the fan vote by a 2 percent margin ahead of Drouin.
Drouin is still in the running for the award among two other men’s finalists. The winner will be announced Dec. 18.

Earlier in the summer, Drouin finished his IU career with his fifth NCAA high jump championship, winning the high jump competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 7.

Following that, he was named National Field Athlete of the Year and then Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year, becoming the third track and field athlete to capture the award.
