A man committed suicide in his car Monday afternoon shortly after brandishing a gun at a Veterans Affairs clinic, Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Steve Kellams said.
Police arrived at about 4:15 p.m. Monday to the Bloomington Outpatient Clinic on the 400 blcok of South Landmark Avenue in response to calls about a man with a revolver. The man, David Todd, 65, was not pointing the weapon at anyone, except briefly at himself. Instead, he merely held the gun by his side.
Witnesses said he was muttering about a nurse at the clinic being wrong about something.
The are was cleared before police arrived and Todd was told to leave. He got in his 1989 grey Ford F150 in the parking lot and drove away before police were on the scene.
Police followed Todd for a short time and tried to get him to pull over. Eventually, on the 200 block of South Yancey Lane, Todd pulled over to a grassy area. Before police could approach the vehicle, Todd fired a single gunshot to his own head.
He was transported to Bloomington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No one was hurt at the clinic. South Yancey Lane was closed for about an hour after the shooting.
