HALFTIME: IU tied with Illinois

In its first Big Ten game of the year, Indiana is tied at 39 with Illinois at the half. Freshman forward Noah Vonleh leads the Hoosiers with 13 points and five rebounds.

Vonleh also went 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.

The Illini made its first four shots of the game, getting off to a quick eight to three lead before the Hoosiers scored the game’s next seven points to lead 10-8 with 15 minutes and 58 seconds remaining in the first.

From there, Illinois went on a 13-3 scoring run of their own. That run was stopped by freshman forward Troy Williams, who grabbed an offensive rebound and put up an off-balance layup to cut the Illini’s lead to 21-15.

Indiana, which had turned the ball over 20 times in each of its past two games, handled the ball well in the early parts of the half, but in a span of less than 10 minutes turned the ball over nine times. The Hoosiers finished the half with 13 turnovers, which was seven more than the Illini committed.

For the half, Indiana went 12-of-27 from the field (44.4 percent) while shooting 50 percent from 3-point range (6-of-12). Illinois shot 16-of-35 from the field (45.7 percent), but missed all seven of its 3-point attempts.

Sophomore guard Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell led the Hoosiers in assists with four, while adding in 10 points of his own. Ferrell had more assists than the entire Illinois team, which had two.

Junior forward Rayvonte Rice, who averages more than 18 points per game, led the Illini with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field.
