IU Professor Ruth Stone honored for contributions to ethnomusicology

Ruth Stone, the Laura Bolton Professor of Folklore and Ethnomusicology, received the Honorary Membership in the Society of Ethnomusicology at the society’s meeting in Indianapolis this November.

The award is meant to recognize Stone’s contributions to the field of ethnomusicology.

Stone studied ethnomusicology as a graduate student at Hunter College. She continued her studies at IU, where she earned a Ph.D. in the field.

Stone helped consolidate the IU Bloomington ethnomusicology program, which led to the foundation of the Ethnomusicology Institute.

Harris M. Berger, president of the Society of Ethnomusicology, presented the award to Stone.

“Stone is a scholar who has made essential contributions to a wide range of literatures,” Berger said in a press release.
