Big Ten proposes changes to NCAA

In the latest of a string of decisions altering the landscape of college athletics, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday a series of proposals to improve the treatment of its student-athletes.

The proposals, which were recommended to the NCAA, would allow the conference’s 14 member schools to provide greater care for student-athletes through true cost-of-education scholarships, multi-year scholarship commitments and improved medical insurance.

A press release Wednesday outlined the conference’s plan.

These include raising the amount of scholarships to cover the full cost of ?education.

It will also guarantee athlete’s scholarships even if he or she is unable to play.

The proposal outlines a plan to ensure that student-athletes who leave school early can have his or her scholarship guaranteed for life and provide improved medical insurance for athletes.

“The Big Ten has also agreed to address additional student-athlete welfare issues including, but not limited to, health and safety, time demands and comprehensive academic support by way of a ‘Resolution’ that creates a specific pathway and timeline for implementation,” the release stated.

The proposals come during a time of turbulence for the NCAA and college sports as a whole.

Player compensation has been a topic for debate in recent months.

In March, Northwestern football players voted to unionize and pursue additional rights as student-athletes, and the debate over “pay-for-play” practices has gained traction in recent years.
