Davis expected to move to Indianapolis hospital, showing encouraging progress

Sophomore Devin Davis

IU sophomore Devin Davis is expected to be transported to an Indianapolis hospital closer to his home to continue his rehabilitation, IU men’s basketball announced through its Twitter account.

Davis, 19, was taken to the Bloomington Health Hospital after being struck by a car driven by freshman teammate Emmitt Holt as he was crossing 17th street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

IU Coach Tom Crean said Thursday that Davis is dealing with a "traumatic brain injury."

IU doctor Larry Rink gave his official comment through a pair of tweets updating Davis' status.

“I am happy to report that Devin is making rapid progress towards his recovery,” Rink said. “He is advancing rapidly in his rehabilitation. The Hoosier Nation would be proud of Devin.”

After IU defeated Northwood 90-72 Thursday, Crean began his press conference by saying Davis has been progressing through his recovery.

He added that Davis went for two walks down the hallway Wednesday and spoke highly of the medical team at the Bloomington Health Hospital, mentioning the medical staff, attendants and others who have been with Davis through his recovery.

“He’s definitely making progress, and every day it’s just—it’s unbelievable to see it,” Crean said Thursday. “So for what that’s worth, considering where we were at in the middle of the night on Friday.”

Davis' father, Devin Davis Sr., said his son is "very alert" and is progressing a few weeks ahead of where he was expected to be, IU men's basketball announced through its Twitter account.

Davis Sr. thanked everyone for supporting his son through his recovery through an instagram post of Davis giving the "peace sign" laying in a hospital bed wearing an IU shirt.

"Just wanted to (thank) everyone for their prayers and kind words," Davis Sr. said in the post. "Devin is doing great with the support of Coach Crean and the Hoosier Nation and the hospital staff has been wonderful. From Devin and his family, thank you all. God thank you for giving my son a second chance. And answering my prayers."
