Folklore professor receives honor for music research

Director of the Ethnomusicology Institute in the College of Arts and Sciences David McDonald received the highest honors in his field.

McDonald won the Chicago Folklore Prize for his scholarship in folklore and ethnomusicology, according to a press release.

The prize was presented by the American Folklore Society and is given to the author of the best book about folklore of the year.

McDonald’s book “My Voice is My Weapon: Music, Nationalism and the Poetics of Palestinian Resistance” looks at the Palestinian crisis through music, musicians and popular culture.

McDonald also received the Jaap Kunst Prize from the Society of Ethnomusicology during its conference in ?November.

This is the first time anyone has ever won both awards, according to the press release.

“These two awards are particularly gratifying in that they come from two different disciplines — folklore and ethnomusicology — and two different scholarly societies,” McDonald said in a press release. “Our department is the only one of its kind to combine these two disciplines.”
