Williams receives weekly award

Sophomore forward Troy Williams picked up a weekly honor Monday after his best game in an IU uniform.

Williams was named the Big Ten co-Player of the Week for his play against then-No. 23 Butler on Saturday. He tied his career high with 22 points and pulled in a career-high 11 rebounds en route to his first career double-double.

It's the second conference Player of the Week honor for Williams and IU's first since Williams received the award in March. He shared the honor with Maryland's Jake Layman.

Williams was also tabbed as ESPN.com's Andy Katz's national player of the week.

After a slow start to the season since returning from suspension, Williams has improved in almost every statistical area since last season. He is averaging 13.2 points, a team-high 5.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. All are an improvement from last year, and Williams' turnover numbers have dropped, as well.

IU Coach Tom Crean said Williams' improvement has been more noticeable away from the box score.

"Troy needed to become a more aggressive rebounder, a guy that uses screens better because we want to put the ball in his hands, become a more committed defender, and he's got to stay absolutely humble as he does it," Crean said. "We have made progress, and we have to keep making progress."
