Concert Orchestra to feature guest conductor and instrumentalist

Guest conductor Marzio Conti will conduct the Concert Orchestra as featured instrumentalist Alexandra Katelyn Mullins will play the harp at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Musical Arts Center.

Repertoire includes overture to “Gwendoline,” composed by French composer Emmanuel Chabrier, “Harp Concerto in E-Flat Major, Op. 98” by English harpist and composer Elias Parish-Alvars and “Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 54” by Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich.

Conti has been the titular musical director of Oviedo Filarmonia since 2011. He began his career as a flautist, debuting at the Salzburg Festival with the I Solisti Veneti chamber orchestra at the age of 20, according to the music school.

He has been considered one of the leading flautists of his generation, playing, recording and teaching for major institutions internationally, according to the music school.

As a pupil of Piero Bellugi, he held the positions of chief conductor in various Italian and foreign orchestras, his activity frequently directing orchestras and theaters around the world, ranging from opera to symphonic repertoire.

Conti has appeared on worldwide television and radio broadcasts, promoting contemporary music in addition to traditional symphonic and opera repertoire.

He has been a jury member for numerous international competitions. He has numerous recordings on several major international labels. His CD includes the monograph on Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 for Organ, according to the music school.

The other featured artist, Mullins, is currently a junior studying to obtain a Bachelor of Music. Originally from Charlotte, N.C., Mullins has performed throughout the United States and Europe in many venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.

She is a recent prizewinner in the USA International Harp Competition and other various awards. Her winnings include first place in the Advanced and Young Professional Divisions of the American Harp Society, first place in the Lyon and Healy Awards, first place in the 18th Petar Konjovic Serbian International Harp Competition, first place in the Jacobs School of Music Concerto Competition as well as numerous regional awards, according to the music school.

Performances have included appearances with the Charlotte Symphony and IU orchestras and the Radio and Television Orchestra in Belgrade in 2014.
