Freshman guard second player to leave IU in 2 days

Freshman Mara Muensterman celebrates with teammates after winning the 3-point contest on Saturday during Hoosier Hysteria at Assembly Hall.

Freshman guard Maura Muensterman will be leaving the IU women’s basketball program, as confirmed Wednesday by her Evanville Basketball Academy Coach Phil Kessler.

“She is leaving for sure,” Kessler said.

Muensterman, who played four years at Mater Dei High School, is the second player to leave the program this week. Sophomore guard Taylor Agler announced Tuesday via Instagram that she will be leaving.

Muensterman led Mater Dei to back-to-back state championships and was the 2014 Indiana Miss Basketball runner-up. Despite her high school success and high expectations from former IU Coach Curt Miller, who recruited her, Muensterman appeared in only 14 games all season for 60 minutes total.

In January, IU Coach Teri Moren was asked on her radio show about her lack of time.

“Her situation is not unlike a lot of teams as a freshman,” Moren said. “She was recruited to play on the perimeter. As you guys well know, we have a lot of guards. What we don’t have is depth in the post right now.”

Moren tried moving the guard inside as a post player, but her time never increased. Toward the end of the season, Moren said that Muensterman was starting to grasp the zone defense better. She also said she expected Muensterman to get more time with sophomore center Jenn Anderson out in a March 1 game against Rutgers, but Muensterman missed the game due to a death in the family.

She didn't play in either Big Ten Tournament game to end the season.
