Neher lays out homeless policy

Darryl Neher calls on Dave Rollo to ask questions during the Bloomington City Council meeting at City Hall on Feb. 25. The council was asking questions on TIF districts in Blooomington.

The issue of the city’s homelessness has plagued Bloomington politicians for years.

Monday, Democratic mayoral candidate and Bloomington City Council member Darryl Neher said he supports nonprofits that fight the root cause of homelessness in a ?press release.

“Shelter, food security and safety are the foundations of living a life with dignity,” Neher said in the release. “As a community, we have a moral imperative to find solutions that improve all of our citizens’ security and quality of life.”

Neher’s plan for combating the homelessness is presented in three parts.

First, Neher plans to financially supporting nonprofits through the city’s Jack Hopkins grant for funding social services, which Neher is a part of through his work on the city council.

Second, Neher plans to connect to the community through the Bloomington Police Department’s Downtown Outreach program.

And third, to expand the city’s role with the Community Foundation, the South Central Housing Network and other groups fighting homelessness.

“No one person or organization has the answer to homelessness, which is why my foremost priority is to use my position as Mayor to bring together key stakeholders so we can find a shared solution to a shared problem,” Neher said in a press release. “It’s critical we develop broad community buy-in and move forward to the benefit of all citizens in the city of Bloomington, especially its most vulnerable citizens.”

The primary election for the City of Bloomington will take place Tuesday, May 5. There are three other candidates.
