IU assistant coach Steve McClain is leaving IU to be the new head coach at the University of Illinois-Chicago, according to reports from ESPN’s Jeff Goodman and CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish.
Goodman tweeted that McClain’s introductory news conference is expected to be Wednesday.
McClain, who has 34 years of coaching experience, has been part of IU Coach Tom Crean’s staff for the last five seasons after spending three years as an assistant at Colorado.
Before that, McClain was the head coach at Wyoming from 1998-2006 where he coached the Cowboys to an overall record of 157-115. He led Wyoming to the NCAA Tournament in 2002 and had three other trips to the NIT during his tenure.
McClain’s departure is the first of what is expected to be a few changes this offseason for IU. The Hoosiers are oversigned by two scholarship players for 2015-16.
IU is yet to confirm McClain’s departure.
