Republican chair steps down

Tim Berry, chairman of the Indiana Republican Party, announced Thursday his resignation from the top party position.

Gov. Mike Pence recommended Jeff Caldwell to ?replace Berry in the ?chairmanship during a conference call with the ?Republican State Committee, ?according to the party website.

Caldwell has previously served on the Indianapolis City-County Council and was appointed as the senior adviser and special assistant to the governor, a cabinet level position, according to Caldwell’s website.

“While Tim Berry’s voice and skill will be missed, I am confident that Jeff Caldwell will make a positive impact for our party’s future,” said Indiana House Speaker ?Brian Bosma in a statement.

Berry, who served two years as state chairman, was chosen for the position in 2013.

He has previously served a single term as state ?treasurer and two terms as state auditor.

“Serving as chairman and working alongside such dedicated Republicans has been an honor, and my ?decision to hand over the gavel was not easy,” Berry said in a statement Thursday.

Berry will remain chairman until April to assist with the transition, according to the party website.

“Tim Berry has done an outstanding job as chairman of the Indiana Republican Party,” Pence said in a ?statement.
