Moving onto campus involves more than putting clothes away and setting up the mini refrigerator. Students also need to set up the Internet on their computers, learn how and where to print those upcoming assignments and figure out how to keep their laptops safe.
Janae Cummings from the IT Communications Office offered students advice for how to get started with tech at IU.
She suggested visiting the UITS Student Technology Guide, which offers tips and tricks to students when it comes to tech on campus. She also offered more advice for students learning how to use campus Internet.
PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
Cummings suggests students download and run the IU Secure Setup Wizard to register your computer on the IU Secure network before coming to campus, so that it only takes a few minutes to set up once you’re here. She said doing this will also set up a wireless connection.
PRINTING PROCEDURES
In addition to the printing quota every student gets, UITS asks all to only print 50 pages at a time, to not reuse paper in the printers and to not use special paper, labels or transparencies.
For a list of computer labs on campus, visit the online lab list by going to One.IU and searching "Student Technology Centers."
COMPUTER SAFETY
Cummings suggests running anti-virus software and OS updates and being sure not to click suspicious links or give out your username and password.
Go to protect.iu.edu for more information about safe computer habits.
