IU lineman named Outland semifinalist

Senior offensive lineman Jason Spriggs celebrates a touchdown during IU's game against Indiana State on Aug. 30, 2014, at Memorial Stadium.

Senior left tackle Jason Spriggs was named one of six Outland Trophy semifinalists Thursday. The trophy is given to the best interior lineman on either offense or defense.

Spriggs is a four-year starter for the Hoosiers and only missed one game due to injury.

Earlier Thursday, ESPN NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. came out with his top-10 NFL prospects for each position. Kiper had Spriggs as the No. 5 ranked offensive tackle prospect. He had been slotted as high as a second round pick in some early mock drafts.

The Elkhart, Indiana, native signed with IU as a tight end prospect but earned the left tackle spot as a true freshman. He has a career high 56 knockdowns already this season and has allowed only two sacks on 365 pass attempts.

Spriggs is joined on the list by Baylor tackle Spencer Drango, Stanford guard Joshua Garnett, Notre Dame tackle Ronnie Stanley, and Alabama center Ryan Kelly and defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.

The list will be narrowed down to three at 5 p.m. Nov. 24 on ESPNU. The winner will be announced Dec. 10 on the Home Depot College Football Awards.
