Our campus was most fortunate Wednesday evening, Nov. 11, to listen to a knowledgeable and widely-known scholar and author, Dr. Joy DeGruy, share her work on “post-traumatic slave syndrome.” The event was in the Indiana Memorial Union’s Solarium and attended by hundreds of students, faculty and staff. It was sponsored by CAPS/IU Health Center and the Union Board, among others.
Dr. DeGruy is a well-published scholar who has spoken at Oxford, Harvard and many other colleges. Her three-hour talk was highly informative and inspiring. It was one of those provocative, intellectual and emotional experiences that have sparked lively follow-up discussion. We have found our thoughts and feelings returning again and again to Dr. DeGruy’s remarks since Wednesday.
We wanted to share our disappointment that her lecture was not reported by the Indiana Daily Student. We know what it is like to miss a lecture on campus and then at least have the opportunity to read the highlights in the newspaper. Depriving your readers the opportunity to learn more about Dr. DeGruy’s work was most unfortunate, to our minds.
