Senior named to All-American Team

IU volleyball senior defensive specialist Courtney Harnish was named to the 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District First Team on Thursday.

The award recognizes and appreciates student-athletes for their work academically and athletically.

First team selections progress to the next round of CoSIDA Academic All-American Team ballot where first-, second- and third-team All-American honorees will be chosen later in the month.

As captain of IU volleyball and member of its leadership council, Harnish oversees academics for the team.

Harnish is also a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, an Indiana Scholastic Achievement Award recipient and spent this past summer in Vietnam tutoring and coaching volleyball with children.

Her community involvement also exists close to home as Harnish spends part of her free time volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, Pinnacle School and Girls Inc.

“Courtney is very deserving of all the accolades she is receiving,” IU Coach Sherry Dunbar-Kuzan said in a press release. “They are earned on a daily basis with her driven goals, work ethic and attitude. I’m proud of how she represents herself and Indiana University.”

The senior is set to graduate this spring with a human development and family studies degree with a minor in youth development.
