Concert to feature music and poetry

Poetry and music will combine at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater’s “Poetic License.”

The concert involves a collaboration between the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and the Writers Guild of Bloomington.

Bloomington Symphony Orchestra will perform four pieces at the concert.

Poets from the Writers Guild will read an original poem before each musical performance, according to the Writers Guild website.

The concert is a “marriage of music and poetry,” according to the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra press release.

The repertoire includes Felix Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Romance No. 2,” Samuel Barber’s “Second Essay” and Franz Liszt’s “Les Preludes.”

According to the release, the Beethoven work is “a tender piece that beautifully showcases the lyricism of the violin.”

Barber’s piece reflects his love of the written word, and Liszt’s piece is “a dazzling, free-flowing tone poem, full of beautiful textures and colors.”

Audience members can also celebrate Valentine’s Day by having a message printed in the concert’s program, according to the
release.

The event is 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13.

Doors will open at 7 p.m.
