Ferrell named to midseason watch list, named Big Ten player of the Week

Senior guard Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell takes the ball down the court against Illinois on Tuesday at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers won 103-69.

Yogi Ferrell was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason watch list Monday. The award is given to the top college basketball player in the country. He was also named the Big Ten Player of the Week.

Ferrell has averaged 17.1 points and 6.0 assists a game this season. He is also shooting 44.7 percent from behind the arc and 47.9 percent from the field.

He also broke IU’s all-time assist record Jan. 19 against Illinois. He averaged 16.5 points a game and 7.5 assists in IU’s two wins this week against Illinois and Northwestern.

This is the first time  Ferrell has been named player of the week by the Big Ten in his 4-year IU career, and it marks the third time an IU player has been honored by the conference. Freshman center Thomas Bryant has won freshman of the week twice.

In IU’s seven conference games, Ferrell has been averaging 18.9 points a game to go along with 6.3 assists per game. He is also shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 51.3 percent from behind the arc.

There were a total of 20 players named to the midseason watch list, including two others from the Big Ten: Jarrod Uthoff from Iowa and Denzel Valentine from Michigan State.

Freshman center Thomas Bryant was not named to the Wayman Tisdale Award watch list, given to the top freshman in college basketball.
