IU baseball pitcher named co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

IUBasevsRadford2

Senior starting pitcher Caleb Baragar picked up Big Ten honors Monday, earning Co-Pitcher of the Week after flirting with a perfect game into the seventh inning Sunday against Toledo.

Baragar was untouchable through his first six innings against Toledo, when he faced the minimum and had a couple of sharp defensive plays made behind him in the field. His only hiccup came against the Rockets’ leadoff hitter in the seventh inning as he singled but was left stranded.

Baragar pitched eight shutout innings while tacking on 11 strikeouts to claim the first Big Ten weekly award of his career. The last IU pitcher to be named Pitcher of the Week was senior Kyle Hart, who won the award March 7.

Over the course of his past three starts, Baragar has kept his opponents scoreless while scattering just eight hits over and striking out 23 over 21 innings of work. He also extended his career-best scoreless streak to 24.2 innings in the victory while improving to 2-1 on the season and lowering his ERA to 1.12.
