Tom Crean named Big Ten Coach of the Year by the AP

Head Coach Tom Crean holds the net after finishing the regular season on Sunday at the Assembly Hall.

Tom Crean was awarded Big Ten Coach of the Year by the Associated Press after winning the Big Ten regular season title outright.

Senior guard Yogi Ferrell was also named first team All-Big Ten by the Associated Press.

The Hoosiers went 15-3 in conference and went undefeated in Assembly Hall this season.

This all came after losing sophomore guard James Blackmon Jr. to a knee injury before the beginning of the conference season. The Hoosiers were also without sophomore guard Robert Johnson for the final three games of the regular season.

In those three games without two of IU’s starting guards at the start of the Big Ten, the Hoosiers went undefeated with wins against ranked Iowa on the road and Maryland at home.

Denzel Valentine of Michigan State was named the Big Ten Player of the Year, AJ Hammons of Purdue was named Defensive Player of the Year and Caleb Swanigan was named Newcomer of the Year for the Big Ten by the AP.

The conference’s awards are expected later tonight with an awards show being broadcasted on the Big Ten Network.
