Those interested in delving into the natural world of southern Indiana will have the opportunity to hear from an expert this week.

Steven Higgs, the author of “A Guide to Natural Areas of Southern Indiana,” and an adjunct lecturer at IU, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Wylie House Museum’s Education Center, according to a press release from the museum.

Higgs’ book, published by IU Press in April, is the first comprehensive and completely illustrated work for those interested in any type of exploration across Indiana’s southern region, according to the release.

According to the press release, Higgs unifies the distinct natural characteristics with the history of sites covered in the book, and shares stories about exploring
Indiana.

The book outlines which places would be best suited for certain activities, including bird- and game-watching, fishing, and hiking.

Higgs is also an award-winning environmental writer and photographer and the author of another work titled “Eternal Vigilance: Nine Tales of Environmental Heroism in Indiana,” which was published in 1995 and revolves around citizen activism in cases of
environmental peril.

This more recent “A Guide to Natural Areas of Southern Indiana” has gained the attention of another author, Johnny Molloy, the author of “Top Trails Great Smoky Mountains National Park,” in the field of nature writing.

“I cannot imagine the amount of time that went into exploring all these places,” Molloy said in the release. “Anyone with a general interest in the outdoors, including hikers, birders, campers and fishermen, will find this book useful.”
