IU football gains 15th commit for 2017 class

Head coach Kevin Wilson walks down the sideline as the Hoosiers make a play against Penn State during the second half on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

IU football regained a member of its 2017 class in the minutes that filled the time between the end of the Detroit Lions’ Thanksgiving Day victory over the Minnesota Vikings and the start of the NFC East matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins.

Juan Harris, a 247Sports Composite three-star defensive tackle, had previously committed to IU on July 25 before de-committing on Oct. 16.

Harris most recently took a visit to Bloomington on Nov. 12, when the Hoosiers lost against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

“The school I will be signing with and will be attending next semester is Indiana University,” Harris said in a tweet announcing his commitment. “After visiting Indiana with a clear mind. Things went 10x better then before. Indiana is my 2nd home and that what matter the most … #GoHoosiers.”

IU’s current roster includes a group of student-athletes who will be mid-year graduates, opening up room for someone like Harris to get on campus a semester early.

The Hoosiers’ new 6-foot-4, 368-pound lineman boasted offers from Pittsburgh, Michigan, Texas and more, and had previously committed Iowa. From Dec. 1, 2014 to June 15, 2016, he committed to and de-committed from the Hawkeyes three separate times.

Harris’ commitment gives IU 15 so far for its 2017 class. He is the eighth out-of-state recruit, hailing from Janesville, Wisconsin, and seventh defensive lineman.

IU Coach Kevin Wilson said in his weekly press conference Monday that the Hoosiers would likely take another defensive lineman, and if that meant just one more, Harris has taken up that slot.
