Former IU offensive line coach Greg Frey has taken a job at Michigan and is set to leave Bloomington for Ann Arbor, Michigan, themichiganinsider.com’s Sam Webb reported Wednesday morning.
At Michigan, Frey will coach offensive tackles and tight ends and coordinate the running game. Frey occupied a similar role at IU, where he coached the offensive line, coordinated the running game and was assistant head coach in 2016.
Frey is recognized as one of the top offensive line coaches in the nation. He was nominated for the 2015 Broyles Award and coached Hoosier All-America offensive linemen Jason Spriggs and Dan Feeney.
Hired by former IU Coach Kevin Wilson in 2011, Frey built an offensive line that guided former Hoosier running backs Tevin Coleman, Jordan Howard and Devine Redding to 1,000-yard seasons from 2014-16.
Getting his coaching start at South Florida in 1996, Frey had key ties to the state that allowed for a recruiting pipeline between IU and Florida. Frey had ties to Ohio as well.
The offensive line coach was also an integral part in bringing former defensive coordinator and new IU Coach Tom Allen from South Florida to IU.
Frey had spent time at Michigan as the offensive line coach from 2008-10 before joining Wilson’s IU staff in Bloomington.
There is no word yet on who will replace Frey at IU.
