Man arrested in check fraud connected to ongoing investigation

A Bloomington man was arrested Saturday after attempting to cash a check connected to an ongoing fraud investigation.

Cory Turner, 30, is charged with defrauding a financial institution, a felony. He was also arrested on a warrant in a felony syringe-possession case.

Police responded Saturday morning to the IU Credit Union at 105 E. Winslow Road after receiving a complaint about a man trying to cash a check from an account from which stolen checks had previously been cashed, police said.

The complainant told police Turner was not the same person who had cashed other stolen checks. Turner had only attempted to cash one of the stolen checks for $600.

Turner told police he’d gotten the check from a woman whose name he didn’t know, but he knew her name did not match the one on the check. He was taken to the Monroe County Correctional Center, where he’s held on $10,000 bond.

Police said they’ve requested a warrant for the arrest of the person suspected of cashing the other stolen checks.
