IU women’s soccer coach Amy Berbary will now have another goalkeeper to evaluate during spring practices.
Freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel graduated in December from Novi High School in Novi, Michigan, and is now enrolled at IU.
Kopel played club soccer for the Michigan Hawks in 2015-16 and with the Michigan Jaguars from 2006 to 2015.
During her time with the Hawks, Kopel played alongside current IU sophomore forward Maya Piper and sophomore defender Justine Lynn. Kopel reached the 2016 Under-17 National Championship with the Hawks and the 2015 Under-18 National Championship.
Kopel becomes the third listed goalkeeper on the IU roster. She joins freshmen Bristal Hadley-Mautino and Sarah L’Hommedieu. While both goalkeepers saw action this past season, it was L’Hommedieu who emerged as the starter early in the season. L'Hommedieu started 19 of the team’s 20 games.
The 2016 season was the first time since 2013 that IU reached the Big Ten Tournament after finishing the Big Ten regular season eighth in the conference standings.
