The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced Monday IU junior guard Tyra Buss has been added to the Wade Trophy Watch List, which honors the women’s national player of the year.
The Mt. Carmel, Illinois, native leads the Hoosiers with 18.5 points per game to go along with 4.7 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Earlier this season, Buss became the fastest player to reach 1,000 points in IU history by doing so in just 66 games.
On Sunday, her school-record streak of 59 consecutive games of scoring at least 10 points or more came to an end against Maryland when she scored just seven points.
Buss is the second Hoosier in school history to be named to the Wade Trophy Watch List. She joins all-time leading IU scorer Denise Jackson, who appeared on the list in 1983 and 1984.
Buss is one of 10 players to have been added to the list and is one of 35 players nationally to be on the watch list for the award. The Wade Trophy list will be trimmed to four players come March, and the winner will be announced at the women’s Final Four in April.
