The IU women’s swim and dive team kicked off the Big Ten Championships on Wednesday night, and finished in fourth place after the first day with 108 points.
The highlight of the night came by way of a silver medal for IU in the 200-yard medley relay. The Hoosiers were lead by senior Gia Dalesandro, juniors Kennedy Goss and Ali Rockett, and sophomore Lilly King. King was particularly important because she swam the 50-yard breaststroke leg in 25.55 seconds, good for the fastest time in the country this year. The team’s mark of 1:35.74 hit the NCAA A-cut as well.
The Hoosiers also finished fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of senior Stephanie Marchuk, junior Delaney Barnard, Goss and Dalesandro swam its season-best time 7:04.50. That was also good for the NCAA A-cut.
Competition will begin again tomorrow at 11 a.m.
