A 17-year-old is in juvenile detention after he allegedly stole an SUV and was apprehended in a Walmart parking lot.
Police received a call at 1:18 a.m. Monday from a complainant on the 2300 block of South Rogers Street who said his black 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer had just been stolen, Bloomington Police Department Capt. Steve Kellams said. The car had been left unlocked with keys inside it.
While officers input the report, county officials received a call about suspicious activity at a house on South Elm Leaf Drive. County and city officers responded, and city officers found the stolen Trailblazer on the street.
Soon after, police found two suspicious males in the parking lot of the nearby Walmart. One of them, a 20-year-old, was released.
The other, the teenager, had been reported as a runaway the day before. Police found keys to the Trailblazer in his pocket.
He did not give a statement, and his parents could not be contacted. He was arrested and charged with felonies for vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.
