Police respond to mischief, counterfeiting and battery on St. Patrick’s Day

Criminal Mischief

A man told Bloomington police someone was shooting what he suspected was a BB gun at his apartment window around 9:30 p.m. while he and his wife were home Saturday.

He told officers he heard a large disturbance outside and looked out his window. The man he suspected caused the disturbance, 28-year-old Jeffrey Owens, asked what he was looking at.

The apartment resident told police that Owens, who was across the street in a car, then began shooting at the apartment’s window.

When officers arrived, the man whose apartment was shot at gave a description of the car and police stopped the vehicle.

Owens confirmed he was shooting at the apartment with a BB gun. Police identified three distinct marks on the window and damage to the surrounding bricks.

A K9 unit also found drugs in Owens’ car. Owens was arrested for criminal mischief, intimidation and possession of paraphernalia.

Counterfeiting

Three fake $50 bills were reported to the Bloomington Police Department on Saturday. This comes after a string of incidents involving counterfeit $100 bills before IU’s spring break.

Two of the fake bills were used at the Fresh Thyme Farmers Market on West Third Street.

Employees accepted one of the bills and found the other was counterfeit using a detection marker.

The man who paid with the bills was described as 6 feet tall with a thin build, white and in his late 20s.

The third fake $50 was found at the Starbucks on North Jacob Drive when employees noticed the bill looked different from others in its stack.

BPD officer Robert Skelton said the incidents are likely connected.

Battery

A landlord checking on one of her apartments on South Rogers Street reported being assaulted around noon Saturday.

She said a man who was not on the lease of the apartment hit her arm and pulled a screwdriver out of her hand, causing minor injuries.

The man left before police arrived.
