Though the team's season concluded at the beginning of March, one IU men's basketball player is headed to the Final Four in San Antonio this weekend to extend his college career.
Senior guard Robert Johnson will take part in the 3x3U National Championship, a 3-on-3 tournament that will be played in San Antonio this weekend during the Final Four. The tournament will include 32 teams of four players each, with each team comprised of seniors from the same conference.
Johnson will be joined on the Big Ten team by Minnesota's Nate Mason, Ohio State's Jae'Sean Tate and Purdue's Vincent Edwards. All four players made an All-Big Ten team or were named honorable mention All-Big Ten this year as seniors. Johnson scored 14.0 points per game this season, while his other three Big Ten teammates averaged at least 12.3 points per game.
Pool play for the tournament will take place Friday night and Saturday afternoon before the championship games are held Sunday, April 1. Each team is guaranteed at least three games before knockout rounds begin.
The teams will be competing for $100,000 in prizes, with the winning team getting $50,000 and additional money to be won by winning individual games along the way. Each pool play win earns a team $1,000, and wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals will also be worth another $1,000.
The games will be played on a single basket in a half-court setting, with shots inside the arc counting as one point and shots behind the arc counting for two points. The first team to 21 points wins. All games will either be streamed live on Twitter or televised on ESPN2.
