Blotter: sexual assault at Kilroy’s Sports, loaded gun, 85 grams of marijuana found in car

The Bloomington Police Department responded to 702 reports over Little 500 weekend. This was slightly higher than last year’s 681 cases, including four more violent crimes reported than last year.

Despite the increase in calls, BPD arrested six fewer people this year than last year.

“It felt like for the most part everyone was well-behaved,” BPD Capt. Steve Kellams said.

He said BPD didn’t have much trouble with the bars and parties seemed smaller this year.

IU Police Department Capt. Craig Munroe said his department’s arrests were also lower this year.

“We weren’t having to interfere with anyone’s good time — for the most part,” he said.

Sexual assault reported at Kilroy’s Sports

A 22-year-old woman told officers that, outside of Kilroy’s Sports, a man she didn’t know put his hand up her skirt and grabbed her around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

She reported the man was about 5 feet 6 inches tall, in his early 20s and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

BPD officers asked Kilroy’s Sports management for video surveillance but said the bar was likely too crowded to see anything on the video.

The woman declined to take a sexual assault exam, according to police.

Police will continue to investigate the case.

Loaded gun, nearly 85 grams of marijuana found in car

IUPD officers found a loaded pistol, measuring scales and nearly 85 grams of marijuana after pulling a car over Friday.

They pulled over Jayland Payton, 21, of Fishers, Indiana, around 10 p.m. on West Third Street.

Officers noticed Payton’s car smelled strongly of marijuana, saw the scales and later found the loaded gun in the glovebox. Payton was not licensed to carry the gun.

There was another individual in the car with Payton at the time of his arrest, but they were not charged.

Payton is not an IU student. He was charged with dealing marijuana, carrying a gun without a license and possessing marijuana.

Man lying in street, peeing

IU Health Bloomington Hospital staff called BPD around 5:30 a.m Sunday after seeing a 47-year-old man lying in the street with his genitals out, peeing.

Officers tried to help the man out of the road near West First Street and South Fairview Street, but reported he was too drunk to stand.

Police said he was clearly drunk and they had to half-carry him to the side of the road.

The man was charged with public intoxication and public nudity.

Man tries to steal car battery, threatens other man with knife

A man was sleeping in the truck bed of his white Ford F-150 early Sunday morning when he told officers he awoke to someone banging on the truck.

He reported seeing a man in his early 30s under the hood of the truck, attempting to remove its battery. He told officers he tapped on the man’s shoulder and asked what he was doing.

The man trying to take the battery reportedly said he thought the truck was abandoned. The man who owned the truck told officers his dog then started barking and the other man pulled out a folding knife.

He reportedly did not display the knife's blade, but argued with the man who owned the truck briefly before apologizing and leaving.

Nothing was stolen.
