An attempted murder suspect is in critical condition Friday after shooting himself in the head, according to Bloomington police.
Brandon Richardson, 34, was accused of beating his girlfriend severely over the course of three days, beginning Monday. Police began searching for him Wednesday. Officers said he was considered armed and dangerous.
The Bloomington Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team went to search a house on West Vernal Pike on Friday where they suspected Richardson was staying.
BPD and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office officers blocked traffic at Vernal Pike and Woodyard Road around 12:30 p.m. Friday, trying to prevent Richardson from escaping.
The Critical Incident Response Team then approached the house, prompting Richardson to flee in a 2003 red Acura. Richardson hit a sheriff’s car and three other police cars as he tried to flee.
He then shot himself in the head once.
Richardson was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital where he was in critical condition for several days. According to an update from BPD, Richardson was pronounced dead from his injuries at 2:17 p.m. Tuesday.
