No arrests in Little 500 party shooting

No arrests have been made in relation to the shooting at a Little 500 party early Sunday that left an Indianapolis man with two bullet wounds.

The man’s injuries are non-life threatening, Bloomington Police Department Lt. John Kovach said Tuesday, but he may need surgery.

Kovach said he was unaware of any suspects in the case.

BPD Capt. Steve Kellams said Wednesday he had no update on the shooting.

The 20-year-old Indianapolis man was shot at the party around 2 a.m. Sunday, once in his leg and once in his buttock, according to police. The event was held in the banquet space at the Bedräk Cafe on South Walnut Street.

He told police he felt his leg lock up and fell to the ground, realizing he’d been shot.

The man reported he had no idea who shot him or why they would. He told officers he didn’t know of any enemies and was not in any kind of fight at the party.

Police said hundreds scattered, running from the party when the gunshots rang out. Wallets, keys and coats were left behind in the chaos.

One witness told officers everyone was dancing when they heard gunfire, and then it was a mad scramble to get out of the venue.

Multiple partygoers told police they didn’t see the shooting happen. No gun has been recovered.

“That’s pretty much the gist of it,” Kovach said. “It looks like nobody saw it.”

The victim of the shooting has not responded to request for comment.
