Burglary call ends in arrests of people hiding in attic, refrigerator

A burglary call Wednesday ended in an hour-long standoff and four arrests.

Police responded to the call around 11 p.m. and found the back door of an 11th Street home had been kicked in. While they were looking around inside, the victim — who initially fled the scene — returned.

The 25-year-old man told officers that two men he knew broke down his door, battered him, took his phone and threatened to kill him with a knife.

After talking to witnesses, police learned the suspects fled to a house in the 1500 block of 12th Street.

Officers arrived at the house but reported no one would come out. While they waited outside for a search warrant to go through, two men eventually exited the home.

Police said Cody Ward, 24, came outside after an hour-long standoff. He reportedly began to give a statement, but when officers indicated they knew he was lying, he declined to speak any more.

He was arrested on preliminary charges of burglary, robbery and an outstanding warrant.

A second man, who did not face any charges, came out while Ward was talking to officers and told police there were three more people inside who wouldn’t come out.

Once police got the search warrant, they found Heather Brown, 33, and Ashton Ward, 25, hiding in the home’s attic. Both women had outstanding warrants for their arrest.

Police said the final person in the house, Christopher Moen, 25, was found hiding in a refrigerator.

Moen admitted to robbing the man but denied having a knife.

He was removed from the refrigerator and arrested on preliminary charges of robbery and burglary.
