In its inaugural year in 1991, IU Dance Marathon raised $10,900. Almost every year, it raised more money than the last. One reason is because of its member growth, as it is one of the largest student-run philanthropies in the nation.
There have been many milestone years in IUDM history. In 1995, it raised over $100,000. The next achievement was raising over one million dollars, which was surpassed in 2007. Last year’s total was the largest yet, with the total being about $4,200,000.
Senior Peyton Allan, IUDM vice president of finance, said it is not about raising more than the year before but rather fundraising as much as the organization can.
All of the funds raised go to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis, except for operational costs. Operational costs are funds needed to keep IUDM running, such as event costs.
