After spending two years juggling both head coach and defensive coordinator responsibilities, IU coach Tom Allen promoted linebackers coach Kane Wommack to defensive coordinator Thursday morning.
“I have tremendous confidence in him and his understanding of our entire defense from the front to the back,” Allen said in a press release. “I will still be heavily involved, but Kane will take over the play-calling responsibilities, the organization of our defensive staff and all that we do on that side of the ball.”
Wommack, who served as defensive coordinator at Eastern Illinois University and the University of South Alabama, joined the Hoosiers’ staff in January of 2018 as the linebackers coach. He will continue to coach the linebacker group along with his new duties as defensive coordinator.
While at South Alabama in 2016 and 2017, Wommack was the youngest defensive coordinator in the Football Bowl Subdivision and turned the Jaguars into one of the most improved units in the entire country. In 2016, the Jaguars were the 5th-most improved scoring defense in the nation.
“Collectively our defense will function as a highly efficient unit, emboldened to take on the challenges of the Big Ten,” Wommack said in a press release. “Our players are fierce and disciplined competitors, and I am honored and extremely psyched to be their defensive coordinator.”
Wommack will be the program's first defensive coordinator since Allen held the post during Kevin Wilson's final year as head coach in 2016.
