Bloomington residents will face a cold snap, delayed sanitation services and possible burst pipes over the next few days.
Trash and recycling
Sanitation services for Bloomington will be delayed Wednesday and Thursday because of the cold temperatures, city sanitation director Rhea Carter said.
If a resident’s collection day is Wednesday, it will be Friday this week. If the collection is scheduled for Thursday, it will take place Saturday.
Elisa Pokral, Monroe County Solid Waste Management District community outreach coordinator, said all five of the county’s recycling centers will be closed Wednesday, and the South Walnut Street location will open at noon Thursday.
Frozen pipes
Cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and burst inside buildings, said Brandon Prince, Bloomington's assistant director of transmission and distribution. Letting faucets slowly drip or running a small stream of water throughout the next few days can help prevent this issue.
Suzanne O'Connell, vice president of real estate for Cedarview Management, said she can’t think of a reason why a landlord would tell tenants not to drip their faucets. Another way to ensure pipes don’t freeze is opening up cabinet doors to allow extra heat in.
She said tenants should pay extra attention to faucets on exterior walls.
