IU men’s soccer sophomore midfielder Griffin Dorsey signed a Generation adidas deal with Major League Soccer on Friday afternoon.
By signing the contract, Dorsey foregoes his final two years of eligibility.
“Unfortunately, it is time for me to move on from IU and pursue my dream of being a professional soccer player,” Dorsey said in an IU Athletics press release.
Generation adidas is a joint program between MLS and adidas in which top collegiate underclassmen and youth national team players sign professional contracts before the MLS SuperDraft. These contracts do not count against MLS teams' salary restrictions.
Former IU forward Mason Toye was taken No. 7 overall in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by Minnesota United FC after signing a Generation adidas deal.
Last season, Dorsey was named a second-team All-American by United Soccer Coaches, College Soccer News and a third-team member by Top Drawer Soccer. He scored five goals and notched five assists. Dorsey was named a First-Team All-Big Ten and All-North Region player for his efforts.
He was also called up to the U-20 USA men’s national team in 2018 as part of the CONCACAF U-20 Championships.
“Griffin has worked really hard to earn this opportunity to sign with Major League Soccer as a member of their 2019 Generation adidas program,” IU Coach Todd Yeagley said in a press release. “He has a tremendous future ahead, and we know he will represent IU Soccer very well as he continues along his soccer journey.”
