A 19-year-old student reported having her clothes repeatedly stolen from the Read Center laundry room.
Indiana University Police Department Capt. Craig Munroe said she reported the three instances to the police Sunday. The alleged thefts took place Jan. 13, Jan. 24 and Jan. 27.
Police said the stolen clothing had a total value of about $170.
Munroe said the case is under investigation, but there are no cameras in the laundry room, so determining a suspect will be difficult.
Police don’t know at this point if someone is targeting the student specifically or if other people have had things stolen but haven’t reported, Munroe said.
IU spokesperson Chuck Carney said laundry theft in residence halls is not a common problem.
“Residential Programs and Services is following up with the student who reported these thefts to address her concerns and offer assistance,” Carney said in an email.
Resident assistant Matthew Serf said it is best for students to either stay in the laundry room when their laundry is being washed or get the clothes out of the machine soon after.
