Entering a season that has already placed high expectations on the IU men’s soccer team, the stakes have risen even higher with the unveiling of the Big Ten preseason poll Tuesday afternoon along with the preseason honors list.

No. 2 IU narrowly claimed the spot in the Big Ten poll, just barely edging out the reigning College Cup champions, No. 1 Maryland.

The Hoosiers travel to College Park, MD on Oct. 18 to take on the Terrapins.

Although IU enters regular season play with almost a completely different starting lineup than last season, three players were still selected for the Big Ten preseason honors list.

IU’s honorees included sophomore defender Jack Maher and senior defenders Spencer Glass and Simon Waever.

Maher, the Hoosiers' lone returning starter, will be tasked with filling the void left behind by 2018 MAC Hermann Award winner Andrew Gutman. Meanwhile, neither Glass nor Waever started for IU in 2018 but are expected to be main sources of production and playmaking right away.

IU kicks off the season on Friday as it hosts the University of Pittsburgh in the Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article stated that the University of Pittsburgh was named Pittsburgh University. The IDS regrets this error.
