Bloomington Symphony Orchestra to celebrate 50 years

Artistic director Adam Bodony conducts the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra in a string rehearsal Sept. 15, 2015, in the orchestra room of Bloomington High School South.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra members have invited their former conductor, Charles Latshaw, to return for their Homecoming concert. The orchestra is set to perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Buskirk box office or online at bctboxoffice.org. Student tickets cost $8, and regular admission ranges from $12- $17. Prices will increase if tickets are purchased on the day of the performance. Those 18 and under are free but still require a ticket.

The ensemble will play the overture to Johann Strauss’ “The Gypsy Baron” and a trumpet concerto by Lauren Bernofsky, a Bloomington resident and composer. John Rommel, a professor at the Jacobs School of Music, will be performing the trumpet concerto.

Following an intermission, the orchestra will end the concert with Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, conducted by the current artistic director for the BSO Gómez Guillén.
