Man steals passenger’s iPhone XR after driving him home

A man reported his iPhone XR was stolen early Sunday morning after he mistakenly got into a car thinking it was his Uber.

Bloomington Police Department Lt. John Kovach said the man called an Uber from Kilroy’s Sports Bar to take him home. He got into a black SUV and was told by the driver he wasn’t an Uber.

“Make sure the vehicle and driver match the information given before getting in the vehicle,” Kovach said.

The driver told the man he could take him home if he paid him, Kovach said. The driver asked the man to pay him through the mobile payment service Venmo.

Kovach said the man got out of the vehicle when they arrived at the destination and gave the driver his phone to enter his payment information on Venmo. He said the driver then drove away with the man’s phone.

BPD knows the suspect was a man but doesn’t have any more information, Kovach said. He said the stolen iPhone XR was valued at $1,000.
