Several IU students were told to return from Chinese flagship capstone programs in China by Feb. 5 due to the coronavirus outbreak, the director of the flagship center said Wednesday.
Six students in Nanjing, China, were notified they must leave, Director of the Chinese Flagship Center Yea-Fen Chen said. Students in Taiwan and Taipei are not affected and will continue their programs as planned.
The National Security Education Program sent an email to Chen on Tuesday evening telling her that students in certain areas of China were required to return. Chen said NSEP will assess the situation and give an update by March 1 on whether students will be allowed to go back to China.
The program is temporarily on hold for those completing its abroad requirements. The capstone program requires students to study and complete an internship in China, according to the Chinese flagship program’s website.
Chen said students' health and safety are importantto the Chinese Flagship Center. The center is working to return students safely.
