IU women’s basketball fell two spots to No. 17 in the AP Poll on Monday following its overtime loss to Northwestern. Freshman forward Mackenzie Holmes was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week for her performance in the team’s loss.
The Hoosiers lost their first conference home match against the Wildcats 71-69 in overtime on Jan. 16. They blew an eight-point lead with under six minutes to go in regulation and then a four-point lead with 2:05 left in overtime.
“The game should have never gone into overtime,” IU head coach Teri Moren said after Thursday’s loss. “We gotta look at ourselves, accept this and hopefully learn from it.”
Holmes racked up a season-high 22 points and nine rebounds in her 27 minutes off the bench. The freshman pushed her shooting percentage to 67.6%, the fourth highest in the NCAA.
Minnesota’s freshman guard Sara Scalia was the other freshman that earned Co-Freshman of the Week honors by the conference office Monday.
IU takes on No. 20 Maryland in College Park at 8 p.m. Monday night as it tries to avoid losing three straight games.
