IU Athletics announced the creation of a Name, Image and Likeness Task Force on Wednesday.
The 14-member task force will work to provide guidance to student-athletes in an effort to maximize their opportunities with NIL.
“NIL is an important part of what IU Athletics will do in support of our students for years to come, and we plan to be a leader in this area,” IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson said.
The task force is co-chaired by Becky Pany, IU Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sport Administration and Jeremy Gray, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications/Director of the Cuban Center. The rest of the task force includes coaches, associate athletic directors and professors.
Earlier this month, IU announced a partnership with Opendorse, a company set to help maximize the value of IU student-athletes.
In April, the NCAA Board of Governors recommended all three NCAA divisions revise their current legislation in regards to athletes being compensated for their name, image and likeness. The changes are expected to be adopted by January 2021 and put into effect for the 2020-21 academic year.
The proposed NIL legislation will allow student-athletes to be compensated for things such as endorsements, sponsorships and personal appearances.
The task force “will provide oversight over an area that will be an ongoing, functioning part of the IU Athletic Department,” according to an IU press release.
