2020 graduates to have virtual graduation

Members of the graduating class of 2018 pose for a group picture before the start of the undergraduate commencement May 5, 2018, in Memorial Stadium. IU announced Tuesday the winter 2020 commencement ceremony will be conducted virtually, but spring 2021 is planned to happen inperson at Memorial Stadium.

IU’s December 2020 graduation ceremony, which was opened for both spring and fall 2020 graduates, will be virtual, IU said in an email. The university’s first-ever virtual commencement ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. on December 19 at a link that will be sent to graduates at a later date.

“Everyone hoped we could hold a live, in-person Commencement by the end of 2020, but the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and its required limits on large gatherings have made such an event impossible to hold this year,” the email read.

IU is allowing 2020 graduates to walk in a possible May 2021 in-person graduation ceremony. The graduates’ families and friends are also invited to the spring commencement, the email said.

In order to communicate further commencement plans to graduates, IU is extending 2020 graduates’ access to their university email for three terms after their graduation day.

Further information about graduation, such as the timeline for ordering caps and gowns, can be found on IU’s commencement website.
