Todd Rokita defeats Jonathan Weinzapfel to become Indiana's next attorney general

Todd Rokita is Indiana’s next attorney general, according to the Associated Press. He beat Democratic candidate Johnathan Weinzapfel.

Rokita has served as the Indiana Secretary of State and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He ran for U.S. Senate in 2018, but lost the primary.

Rokita received around 38% of the vote in Monroe County. Weinzapfel won Monroe County with around 62% of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Monroe County Elections Board.

Rokita is anti-abortion, does not want to defund the police and does not support strong federal government action, according to his campaign website.

Rokita issued a victory statement on his Facebook page.

"I want to thank my fellow Hoosiers for the trust and confidence you have placed in me to serve as your next Attorney General," he said in the post. "And thanks to my family, friends, co-workers, our great volunteers and all the men and women of good faith who wanted to make sure we had the best person for this important job."

Weinzapfel conceded the election to Rokita at about 11:15 p.m. in a news release.

"While we are disappointed in the outcome, I could not be more proud of the effort we made and thee issues we raised," he said.

Weinzapfel thanked his campaign team, supporters and family in the release. He said the issues raised by his campaign, including protecting the Affordable Care Act, recovery from the pandemic and improving the criminal justice system, will continue to be defining issues in Indiana.

Rokita confirmed Tuesday he tested positive for COVID-19.
