A Monroe County Sheriff's Office Deputy died in a car crash Monday while he was responding to an emergency call.
James A. Driver, 38, of Spencer, Indiana, was responding to a call using his emergency lights in a police vehicle when he collided with another vehicle at approximately 4 p.m. on State Road 45 north of Eller Road in Bloomington, according to an Indiana State Police press release.
Christopher A. Derr, 22, of Monticello, Illinois, was traveling southbound on SR 45 when he attempted to stop but lost control of his vehicle and trailer and collided with Driver’s police car, according to the release.
Driver was ejected from the vehicle on impact, and his vehicle rolled off the road before stopping, according to the release. He was unconscious and unresponsive on the scene, according to the release.
Driver was wearing his seatbelt but was ejected due to the severity of the collision, according to an Indiana State Police press release.
Driver was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, according to the release.
Derr and his passengers were not injured in the crash. Derr was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for blood testing.
The Indiana State Police said the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone wishing to donate on behalf of Driver can mail donations to Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation, Inc. at 1710 S. 10th St., Noblesville, Indiana, 46060, according to the Indiana State Police press release. Donations may also be made at any Old National Bank or First Financial Bank under the name Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation James Driver.
These are the only accounts the family has agreed to receive donations from, and opening any other accounts is discouraged, the release said.
