Redshirt senior Joey Brunk announced Tuesday that he will be transferring and won’t return to play another season with IU men’s basketball.
“I’m incredibly grateful for Indiana University,” Brunk said in a tweet. “I have been able to get my Master’s Degree and am thankful to have been able to continue my education. I’ve decided to pursue my final year elsewhere.”
He is now the third player — joining senior guard Al Durham and Armaan Franklin — to announce they will be transferring since Mike Woodson was named IU’s next head coach on March 28.
Brunk transferred to IU from Butler University in 2019 and started 31 games for the Hoosiers. He averaged 6.8 points and 5.2 rebounds that season. But this past season, he watched all of the games from the sidelines.
He said he suffered a back injury due to a small issue with a back disc and underwent surgery Dec. 30, 2020.
In March, Brunk still wasn’t sure what he would do next year, so he chose not to participate in the team’s senior day festivities.
“I chose not to participate one because it felt like if I participate, that's kind of a closure deal for myself,” Brunk said in a March 1 press conference .
But now, he is sure about his decision.
When Brunk transferred to IU in 2019, he had already finished his degree and graduated from Butler University. He will finish master’s this spring and will have to find another academic program to pursue next year.
